Is Eco fashion too expensive to have widespread appeal?

Critics are claiming since less than 1 per cent of the world’s cotton production is organic; this will never be anything but a niche area.

At a cost of 17 teaspoons of chemicals per non-organic T-shirt 1 per cent is a great place to start.

If the Sierra Club gets its way in terms of “Responsible Gold,” eco-Jewelry will be too expensive to wear. Just a future fright thought?

Why is that frightening? I’d rather pay more for responsible jewelry or not own it in the first place. In the past, when people really weren’t aware of the environmental and social costs, it was different. Now, however, we can make better choices. I think I’ll stick with the jewelry I might inherit someday and look for handcrafted, nonprecious metals instead.

FWIW, my husband and I were fresh out of college when we got engaged. He saved up to get an engagement ring directly from a socially responsible diamond mine in Canada, because neither of us felt comfortable getting a “conflict” diamond. It’s not that big, but it’s absolutely beautiful to me. Maybe if we focus more on what really matters about what we wear, the size or the shine of the jewelry won’t seem so important. Re: clothing, I can’t afford to buy everything organic yet, but I do what I can. It’s a start.
