eco fashion news and reviews brought to you by Greenloop
Well, Greenloop readers, you’re lucky I am such a devoted reporter of eco fashion news that I dragged myself out last night to Global Green’s star studded 5th Annual Pre-Oscar fete at Avalon Hollywood. It was treacherous, but it seems I’ll do just anything to keep you in the know.
Ironically founded by Mikhail Gorbachev, Global Green USA works with governments, industry, and individuals to create a global shift toward a sustainable and secure future. They focus on green building (think Brad Pitt erecting solar powered houses for stormtorn New Orleans), clean and accessible water for all, and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction. This election year, Global Green USA used their Pre-Oscar paparazzi party to highlight their 2008 theme: “Drive Green. Live Green. Vote Green.” (I guess Party Green is assumed here.)
Warning: This post is about to become extremely catty and snarky and full of gossip. If that bothers you, please link off immediately to our previous post Green Your Closet 2008.
So, the usual suspects of the Hollywood green celebrity scene were there…Bill Maher mc’d, Adrian Grenier tried not to be a total cad (he was looking way more mountain man than ladies man), Oliver Stone and Lawrence Bender (Producer of An Inconvenient Truth) schmoozed, and Salma Hayek busted out (pun intended) her gorgeous Stella McCartney pantsuit for the event. Josie Maran promoted her new organic line of cosmetics and was very sweet when asked some hard questions about why Red 40 and Yellow #5 were making it into her “natural” cosmetic line.
She said, “Those are all minerals.” (Wikipedia says they’re derived from coal tar and banned in several EU countries, but hey, it’s a party. We’re gonna just save those exposes for another day.) Michael Franti, Damien Rice, and Michelle Branch performed. Tia Carrere, Taylor Dane, Jason Lewis (yummy), Dana Delaney, Alexis Arquette, Anna Getty, and Christian Slater were also in the mix. Leila Connors-Petersen (Co-Director of The 11th Hour) spoke about the state of the world, while half the audience networked loudly in the background. The activists and eco fashion set of SoCal were there as well, keeping things down to earth, friendly, and fun.
The food was fancy, the organic drinks were free and flowing, and the VIP room was
extremely tame (though beautifully decorated by Cisco Homes.) There was a massive ice sculpture next to an “eco fireplace”….hmmm. When asked about the environmental footprint of the event, Global Green’s Director of Communications Ruben Aronin said it’s worth it. “As a fundraiser, the dollars that are raised are helping us dramatically to reduce carbon footprints across the country through our work to green New Orleans and create a green-building infrastructure here in Los Angeles. We have the unique opportunity here in Hollywood to use the megaphone of celebrity to inspire and educate hundreds of millions of people around the world.” …Sounds about right Ruben. Overall, it was a very fun night for the eco set and another hallmark of the Green Movement’s gaining momentum in the entertainment capital of the world. Global Green USA raised $420,000 for their organization, partygoers learned a little bit more about the state of our favorite blue-green planet, and no one got in a fight. Good times.
Greenloop represents the fusion of aesthetics and ethics, of style and sustainability, by providing the opportunity to look good AND do good without sacrificing your sense of style.

Ligiht and fun! Just enough dirt to keep it interesting although I would love the follow-up on the “minerals” in the makeup but good not to trash her at a party.
do you know which songs damien rice or glen hansard played?
I’m not sure what Damien and Glen sang. There were a bunch of rooms at the Global Green party-I was upstairs during both their sets hangin’ with the locals.
