eco fashion news and reviews brought to you by Greenloop
I’m barely catching up with myself today, drew a blank, and didn’t get an interview done in time. My bad… So instead I’ll bring you up to speed on my own insanity, which this week has been pretty strange.
You see, these last few days, the thought that no matter what we do, we’re going to hell (or ELLE as I like to write… I have my reasons) in a hand basket… that no matter how much green we spread on Earth, the Blue Meanies are gonna win with their wars, and their bombs, their diseases and their bad news!
I suppose we all get stuck in a rut sometimes… which was pretty much my dad’s constant mode of existence, and why I became an environmentalist, to prove him wrong… once in awhile his voice catches up to me…. you’re wasting your time, it’s all for nothing, go out and make a life for yourself, have fun, and don’t get caught!
The last part I got down pat… but the rest? I’ve always seen fashion as the way to reach people, open their hearts, get them to love and enjoy beautiful things, leave all the crap behind. But yeah, living in Westport, Connecticut, where it’s all about social climbing into the Fortune 500, thinking green is like a ball and chain on your fast and fancy footwork.
So I’m thankful for the few friends I have here, who give me a shout out, and show me it’s not all shot to chocolate color. I ended up in the City last Sunday afternoon and witnessed the rebirth of a neighborhood. The Lower East Side has embraced the green lifestyle and celebrated with a green fashion show in the street. I brought back a few images if you’re interested.
And yet, there’s SkunkFunk, or SkunkJunk as they deserve to be called. I walked into their new space on Orchard street, and every item of clothing has the color green in it. I ask the sales girl, is it all organic, and with a big smile, she said “sure it is!” Little did I know she was just humoring me… A quick look on their website had me realize it’s nothing more than your typical apparel explotation. Shame on her, and shame on them for riding on a trend, and fooling everyone!
(Update: I since heard from Kyle Retzik at Skunkfunk who called me to attention. I had looked in the clothes for something on the labels, and on their website for any details on their fabrics… maybe they’re a company which subscribe to this motto: ”Our job is to put it there. And then to not tell anyone. ” - David Bergman (from Transparent Green) So all the power to them! I will revisit, egg on my face and bite my tongue! Rem)
This said, the photos in their ads are really cool, but it’s skin deep. I’d have thought more of them coming from Spain! Makes me want to know everything green that’s going on in fashion world, in Italy, in France, in Greece… will you help me? If you know green fashion companies in Europe, breaking ground, green fashion magazines… send them my way… let’s make it global!
The night before I was at Camp Hill Farm, celebrating the full moon. They founded the Rockland Farm Alliance, and were courageous enough to land me on their committee, even though I’m such a staunch opponent of the relicensing of the nuclear power plant just a few miles away, on the other side of the river. They grow amazing heirloom tomatoes, and host wonderful events, cause in addition to being farmers, they’re musicians and artists… you walk onto their property and it’s like you’ve just been time traveled back to the spaced out days of communes, and that’s not at all such a bad thing. It’s brilliant in fact. It’s what we need.
I’ll be back next week with something concrete, promise… In the meantime, keep the green fashion flame burning while I go tear down the military industrial complex and liberate batteries for the electric car. Someone should make a clothing line!

Hi, it seems maybe you got the wrong impressionabout skunkfunk. 80% of our collection is green, mostly bamboo and organic cotton. I would be happy to answer any questions or provide more detail about us as an eco-company.
Thanks
Kyle
(Hmmm… OK, I take it all back, and have included a correction/apology/excuse in the text. Thanks! RemyC.)
