De Rigeur Reusable Water Bottles

Honestly, the concept of disposable plastic items has got to be one of the most stupid ideas in human history. On par with nuclear energy, disposable plastics are made for a one-time use, then end up as toxic waste that lasts almost forever. It’s “convenient” and cheap in the short term, and polluting and cancer-causing in the not-so-short term. A shocking factoid: Americans use 2.5 million bottles every hour. Oh my.

So, what to do my friends?  Make a resolution to stop using them. It’s easy. Get yourself the most fabulous water bottle you can find and carry it with you wherever you go. Concerned about water quality? Pepsi’s brand of bottled water, Aquafina, is the best-selling brands of water in the country. It’s tap water. Coca-Cola’s brand Dasani, tap water. If we have filtered tap water at home and the office, why don’t we just fill up our reusable water bottles when we’re there? Much cheaper. Much chiccer. Concerned about what your friends will think if they’re not doing it yet? Believe me, they will be in a few months and then they’ll be so impressed about what a trendsetter you are. And with all the fabulous choices for water bottles on the market, the most difficult thing about getting into the habit of using them is picking which one you want!

Plastic Shopping Bags……………….Fashionable Canvas Totes
Poland Spring and Evian…………..SIGG and Klean Kanteen
Plastic Utensils……………………………Reusable To-Go Ware
Disposable Party Plates……………..Mismatched Vintage Dishware
Styrofoam Takeout…………………….Eating In

Is the trend apparent? With Peak Oil on the horizon, our petroleum-based products are naturally headed OUT. Conscious and cute everyday tools are very much IN. Let’s change the number one selling item at Whole Foods from plastic bottled water to stainless steel water bottles, and turn our future landfills into future land trusts.

  1. I bought two of the SIGG bottles at WetSand when I was in Ventura on business, they are the best. This will sound stupid but they are super soft on the mouth and the water never tastes like the apple juice that was in it yesterday. They are spendy but you will never have to buy one again, they are solid. Greenloop branded SIGG bottles would be sweet?

I decided against SIGG because I felt weird about the inner coating and since it was aluminum, I’ve read articles about them tying it to dementia (sp?) so I went with 100% pure stainless steel bottles instead. Pretty much the same weight (very light), no inner coating, and very durable. Use mine all the time. I got the EarthLust tree bottle (here’s a photo: http://www.brightandbold.com/stbo33oztr.html), but I really wished they had more designs out like the SIGG bottles.. the tree is really cute tho, esp in person. I do like the designer SIGG ones they auctioned off, lots of cool designs, just don’t want to drink from it (maybe a vase?)

  3. I don’t want to come off as a huge SIGG fan boy but I will put 100 years of swiss engineering up against stainless any day. Besides I am sick of switching every week based on the latest “science”.

Take your SIGG questions here. http://www.mysigg.com/index.asp?ID=5&PageAction=Custom

  4. I sgree with you.
One of the sudden we are so concerned with possible negatives of reusable bottles, but when we bought that bottled water, we never did.

I work for Stanley, the company known for the old skool hammertone green thermoses. Recently we came out with an awesome line of Outdoor bottles. My favorite is the Stanley Outdoor 16oz. Vacuum Drink Bottle. Check it out here:

  6. Another great article. I like the SIGG bottles myself and they do make some great designs that are actually part of a design collection in the NY Museum of Modern Art. This is a related article Forever in a landfill: Bottled water not just bad for environment that really tries to illustrate the impact of plastic drinking bottles on both, our health and environment.

  7. I just love some of the kids water bottle designs that SIGG offer, plus they are so much nicer then plastic bottles. I just bought my daughter a spongebob sigg bottle. She loves it and will barely drink anything without this bottle
